Gameplay: How Agent Avenue Works
On the surface, Agent Avenue feels light and breezy - but there’s a clever little puzzle underneath. The core of the game revolves around the “I split, you choose” mechanic. Each turn, you offer your opponent two cards: one face‑up, one face‑down. They choose one, and you take the other.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how a turn works:
1. Play Two Cards
You choose two cards with different names:
- One goes face‑up
- One goes face‑down
Your opponent will pick one of these cards to recruit, so you’re constantly trying to tempt, bluff, or mislead them. After placing both cards, you draw back up to four.
You can also discard and redraw before playing, but only up to four times per game - a small but interesting decision point.
2. Recruit Agents
Your opponent chooses one of the two cards you played and places it face‑up in front of them. You take the remaining card.
Each card belongs to a type of agent (like Enforcers, Codebreakers, Daredevils, etc.), and collecting multiples of the same type changes how powerful they become.
3. Move Your Meeple
Every agent card has icons showing how far your meeple moves on the board:
- If you have one of that agent, use the top icon
- If you have two, use the middle icon
- If you have three or more, use the bottom icon
Some move you forward, some move you backward, and some don’t move you at all. This creates a fun tension: do you build a set for bigger moves, or avoid certain agents because they might push you backwards?
Both players move their meeples after recruiting.
How You Win
There are several ways to win (or lose!), which keeps the game interesting:
- Catch your opponent’s meeple by reaching or passing their position
- Collect three Codebreakers to win instantly
- Collect three Daredevils and you lose instantly
- If the deck runs out and a player can’t continue, whoever is closest to catching their opponent wins
This mix of movement, set collection, and bluffing gives the game more depth than you might expect from such a quick playtime.
Our Experience: Fast, Fun, and Sometimes Brutal
On our first play, my husband won in three turns - I wasn’t paying enough attention, clearly! But that’s part of the charm: the game is fast, and mistakes are forgiven because you can just shuffle up and play again.
The bluffing element is where the game shines, but it’s also where I personally struggle. I find bluffing hard, but because the game is so quick and light, it never feels punishing. Even if you misjudge a turn, you’re back in the action immediately.
Final Thoughts: Light, Lovely, and Perfect for Quick Play
Agent Avenue is a charming, easy going game that works beautifully for families or anyone who enjoys light strategy with a dash of bluffing. It’s not a heavy, thinky game - and it’s not trying to be.
